Northsiders take the trophy in the North versus South Challenge

The Northsiders took home the trophy after narrowly winning the North versus South Challenge Walk held in Victoria Park, Monday.

Organized by Kate Mahood-Richards and Christie Anderson of the Huron Heights Home and School Association, the event drew about 350 people, including 169 walkers for the North side, and 150 for the South.

As part of "Turn Off the Screens Week," the event drew more than 100 students out for the School Challenge. Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School won the trophy with 49 students and staff signing in, while Huron Heights had 40, and Elgin Market had 38.

When presented with the trophy Wednesday afternoon, Krista Bell, representing the Northsiders, was thrilled and accepted in memory of Joyce MacDonald, a fellow Northsider, and Cecelia Picot, a devoted Southsider.

Mahood-Richards said the challenge, made popular by former recreation director Keith Davidson, began in the 1970s but the current trophy was first awarded in 1983. The last time it was awarded was 1998 - and the Northsiders have won more times than the Southsiders.

She said the feedback from the community was very positive, so the challenge will likely continue on an annual basis.

The KTTPS Wildcats were excited to receive the first School Challenge trophy, and look forward to defending their title next year.
