The Friday Night Futsal group is now proudly sponsored by the Power Workers' Union (PWU) and Kincardine Home Hardware.

At the opening night of play, Nov. 2, at Kincardine District Secondary School, players were given new T-shirts from the PWU, and new socks from Home Hardware.

Head coach John Risorto said this is the fifth year of the drop-in, futsal group, but the first time it has received any sponsorship. The PWU donated $1,000 to cover the cost of the shirts and new equipment, and Home Hardware donated the socks. The Bluewater District School Board already donates the use of the gym through its community events program, so the group is covered under the board's insurance.

Friday Night Futsal (indoor soccer) is open to boys and girls, ages six to 14, at a cost of $2 per child per night. It runs now through Dec. 21, from 6:30-8 p.m., and Jan. 11 to March 8 next year, also 6:30-8 p.m. The players are required to bring indoor shoes and shin guards, as well as water bottles. The rest of the equipment is provided.

Joining Risorto, are coaches Krista Troke and Adam Carr and several parent and youth helpers.

“Friday Night Futsal is open to whoever shows up,” says Risorto. “We average about 30-40 players per night.”

The evening begins with stretches and a warm-up, followed by a welcome to the new players and an outline of the rules. The group is then divided into four teams, based on age and size, and players rotate on and off the court every five minutes.

Risorto points out that if school is closed in the winter months, due to snowy weather and closed roads, there is no Friday Night Futsal.

He welcomes high school students to volunteer with the group which can sign-off on volunteer hours in their booklets.

Looking at about 30 players that first night, Risorto says, “This is the future of soccer in Kincardine.”
