(LONDON, ON) - The West Region OPP, working alongside transportation and enforcement partners, has concluded Project Safe Haul, a focused commercial motor vehicle safety initiative conducted across the region from Oct. 13 to Nov. 1.
During the campaign, officers and inspectors participated in 22 enforcement blitzes throughout the region, completing 325 commercial vehicle inspections. As a result of these inspections, 119 vehicles were placed out of service for safety-related defects and 266 charges were laid.
Project Safe Haul is designed to improve road safety by identifying unsafe commercial vehicles, addressing regulatory non-compliance, and ensuring that drivers, carriers, and equipment operating on Ontario roadways meet established safety standards.
The OPP thanks the many professional commercial vehicle drivers and carriers who continue to demonstrate a strong commitment to road safety every day. The overwhelming majority of drivers recognize the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, pre-trip inspections, hours of service compliance, and safe operating practices. Their dedication helps keep Ontario's highways safe for all road-users.
The success of this initiative was made possible through the co-operation of numerous enforcement and regulatory partners, including the Ministry of Transportation Ontario, municipal police services, and other participating agencies.
Road safety remains a shared responsibility. The OPP encourages all commercial vehicle operators and carriers to continue prioritizing safety, ensuring vehicles are properly maintained, and addressing mechanical concerns before they become a risk to the travelling public.
"Project Safe Haul reinforces the importance of compliance and proactive vehicle maintenance," says staff-sergeant Tara Bolstad, West Region OPP traffic safety and marine. "While enforcement remains an important tool, we also recognize and appreciate the many drivers and carriers who consistently operate safely and professionally. Their commitment contributes significantly to safer roads across Ontario."
The OPP remains committed to reducing collisions, preventing injuries, and promoting commercial vehicle safety through ongoing education, enforcement, and partnership initiatives.
