Purple Grove news

Congratulations to all Kincardine District Senior School Grade 12 graduates who marked their Commencement, Oct 9, Thanksgiving weekend! We wish you well on your scholastic and employment endeavours!

So, more October birthdays to celebrate - Happy Birthday to Gail Lotton, Jeff Knapp, Melissa Burmaster, Tom Hicks, Nick Gibbons, Lisa Courtney, Janice Miller, and especially to Harold Galloway who celebrated his 90th birthday, Thanksgiving weekend, with family, neighbours and friends!

Eric and Delia Martin celebrate their wedding anniversary this week.

The Walkerton Little Royal had beautiful weather last weekend for the fair, with more beautiful quilts and vegetable, fruit and floral exhibits. Folks had a chance to see the horse show, with entries in the Ontario Four-Horse Hitch Series and a Six-Horse Hitch Class. It was pretty awesome to watch, especially when you were so close to them in the stands at the arena there!

Sympathy is extended to the families and friends of Keith Carter of Ripley, Jack Blue of Listowel and formerly of Ripley, Brenda Merchant of Walkerton, Ed Roppel of Tiverton, Adele Kaminski of Kincardine and Bruce Willits of Lucknow. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all through these difficult times.

The MacDonald family celebrated the Canadian and American Thanksgiving last weekend with almost all of the family in attendance at the home of Doug MacDonald.

It was nice to have Julianne House and her sons home to visit from Terrace, British Columbia, last week. Family suppers and a trip to the cider mill on Wednesday made for some new adventures!

Some of us have been up in the early morning hours to catch the meteor showers of Halley's Comet sliding through near the constellation of Orion. It's been amazing that the skies have been so clear! And over the weekend, we've had the Hunter's Moon.

It was great to attend the Five Star Quilters Guild Quilt Show on the weekend. Thank you for the opportunity to admire some beautiful creations, do some shopping for fabric and notions, visit with new friends and old, and enjoy lunch too!

BRUCE COUNTY DISTRICT WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Thursday, the 69th Bruce County District Women's Institute Rally was held in the Lions Hall in Chepstow with about 30 ladies in attendance.

President Betty Anne Thompson welcomed everyone and Carol Ann Wright of Colpoy's Bay presented a poem, "Welcome to Life on the farm." Nine branches answered the Roll Call: "Who is your favourite woman farmer?"

Our theme was "2026 Year of the Woman Farmer" and host branches were Bervie, Colpoy's Bay and Eden Grove-Cargill. Guests included Grey-Bruce Area president Ellen Waye, Grey County District president Linda Tottenham, Area voting delegate Alyssa Phillippi and Western Board director Fran Farrell. The Women of Excellence Award will be presented to two women of the Purple Valley branch at their next meeting.

Entertainment was also provided by Colpoy's Bay and the ladies were divided into small groups, acting out various jobs on the farm, including " chasing the cows," "mending those overalls," "taking meals to the field," and "fixing the baler." There were certainly some laughs and familiar memories! Eden Grove-Cargill prepared a wonderful chili dinner with huge cake pieces for dessert.

Bervie branch introduced our speaker for the afternoon, Angela Devitt of Stone Bridge Flour in Ripley. She presented a slide-show tour of her business as she developed it from her backyard shed in Kincardine to now a full-size processing shed/shop on the family farm just north of Ripley.

She grinds all her flour, using a mill she imported from Europe, packages and labels all her products to ship out to various local markets and stores throughout the area. The business has nine different kinds of flour. Devitt also uses grains that are grown on the farm and sources specialty wheat from local farmers as well. She is very happy to be able to do all the work herself with some help from her family.

Stone Bridge Flour was pleased to receive two awards at the Royal Winter Fair last year: honourable mention for Excellence in Agriculture, and winner in Supply Chain Excellence. Devitt is extremely thankful to be able to grow, process, package and promote her flour products from her own farm. She also had products available to us to purchase. The Bervie branch thanked her for her presentation.

The silent auction proceeds were more than $400. New business items were discussed, to be voted on at the next District Directors meeting, March 4, 2027, in Chesley. Other coming events include the District Annual, May 27, 2027, and the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario (FWIO) 130th Provincial Conference in June, 2027.

The meeting closed with the Royal Anthem.
