Every year, Canadians gather, Nov. 11, at the local Cenotaph, to honour all their fellow Canadians who served their country in the military and especially those who did not return home. These are emotional moments as the loss of loved ones and dear friends is difficult to understand and to reconcile.
When the First World War ended, Nov. 11, 1918, the bells throughout all of Canada rang out, heralding the end of hostilities and the restoration of peace and freedom in our land. That was the first “Ringing of the Peace Bell.”
The bell at the Knox Presbyterian Church in Kincardine rang out in 1918, and again in 2018 at the 100th anniversary. This year, it will ring once again at the ceremony, beginning at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11, announcing the 108th anniversary of the “Ringing of the Peace Bell."
The Kincardine community is welcome to attend this respectful acknowledgement of the sacrifices of Canada’s soldiers who fought and died for their country. The Kincardine Legion Colour Party will participate, along with several of Kincardine’s finest vocalists. Songs will include “I Vow to Thee My Country,” “Hallelujah,” and “We Rise Again.” The ceremony will end with a stirring rendition of “Highland Cathedral”.
Everyone is invited to attend this memorable ceremony. Donations are welcome.
