Volunteers with the Kincardine Labyrinth Peace Garden in Geddes Park, were putting Kincardine municipal election candidates through their paces as they worked together to prepare the garden for winter, Wednesday morning.
Co-ordinated by volunteer Christina Bandomir, with master gardener Betty Lamont, the work bee welcomed four extra helpers, including mayoral candidate Barb Fisher, and councillor-at-large candidates Ali Shah, Darrel Perry and Mike Hinchberger.
The candidates got their hands dirty, trimming and raking plants, and clearing the detritus out of the garden so the flower beds are ready to lie dormant until spring. Thanks to the extra help, the job that usually takes about two hours, took less than an hour to complete.
The peace garden opened in 2002, with artwork by Kincardine artist Betty Conlin, including the sculpture of Eirene, the Greek Goddess of Peace, holding the Earth in her arms.
This labyrinth, known as a "Chalice" design, has sculpted gardens and paths based on a Classical Labyrinth pattern, similar to the design of one in the cathedral at Chartres, France.
The project began when several Kincardine residents, having had the opportunity to walk labyrinths on separate occasions around the globe, were compelled to create one in their hometown. They formed the "Friends of the Labyrinth Peace Garden" and with much enthusiasm, commitment and hard work, the labyrinth was realized.
People are invited to stroll through the labyrinth in a Walk For Peace.
More volunteers are needed to maintain the Labyrinth Peace Garden. If you are able to help, contact the team at kincardine.peace.garden@gmail.com.
