Canoeist treated for hypothermia after marine incident in Goderich Harbour

(GODERICH, ON) - The Huron County OPP and Huron County Paramedic Services responded to a marine emergency in the water near the Goderich salt mine on the weekend.

Saturday, Oct, 3, at 11:26 a.m., police and emergency services were called to the scene after a concerned citizen observed an individual in distress in the Goderich Harbour near the Maitland River inlet. Two others in a nearby inflatable dinghy assisted and pulled the lone canoeist into their vessel.

The 66-year-old of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Township was in the water for approximately 20 minutes before being rescued. The individual was treated by paramedics, then transported to a local hospital for treatment of hypothermia, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Police are reminding water enthusiasts to plan ahead, check weather forecasts, wind speeds, currents and water temperature before venturing out. The OPP also encourages anyone enjoying the outdoors to travel in groups, if possible, to increase the level of safety in the event of an emergency.
