Kincardine stresses inclusion, respect, community safety after disturbing incident involving youth

The Municipality of Kincardine has been made aware of a disturbing incident involving young people in the community.

"The matter remains under investigation by the appropriate authorities, and we will respect that process and the privacy of those involved," states a press release, issued Friday.

"Regardless of the circumstances of this particular incident, our message is clear: racism, hate, bullying, intimidation and violence have no place in our municipality."

The release states that Kincardine is an inclusive and welcoming community where everyone should feel safe, valued and respected.

"Acts or words that target people because of their race, identity or other personal characteristics, are not consistent with the community we want to be.

"This responsibility belongs to all of us. It is not enough to simply avoid participating in harmful behaviour. When someone is being targeted, bullied or harmed, we all have a responsibility to speak up, seek help and refuse to be a bystander."

According to the release, the municipality states that it continues to stand firmly in support of inclusion, diversity, equity and access, and will continue working toward a community where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

"We ask residents to support one another, to talk with young people about respect and responsibility, and to help ensure that Kincardine remains a community where everyone is welcome. Building an inclusive community requires commitment, compassion, and the collective courage to speak up against hate and bullying. When one member of our community is targeted, it affects all of us.

"The Municipality of Kincardine stands together in condemning racism, hate, bullying and violence in our community.

"We encourage anyone who has experienced or witnessed an incident of racism, bullying or violence, to seek support and report it to the appropriate authorities. Community and mental health supports are also available through 211 Ontario, Victim Services Bruce Grey and the Canadian Mental Health Association Grey Bruce."
