Reflect on the past Kincardine council term before casting your vote

To the Editor:

This is a message to all ratepayers and voters.

As always, it is important to reflect on the councillors' past term and the actions they have put in place on behalf of the ratepayers.

With taxation in mind, reflecting back on the money spent to beautify and maintain Station Beach, the return seems to have been to enhance a destination for day-tourists to park and picnic for free with their provisions, food, gas and other needs brought from their home locale. Ratepayers who provide the facilities are unable to, or limited access, due to availability.

Reflect back on the immediate removal of the footbridge at the South Street access due to erosion concerns of Kincardine creek, erosion concerns of banks and properties still not addressed but the long-time bridge is gone.

Reflect on the Secord Monument issue and removal then demolition of an appreciative symbol regarding a popular and generous Kincardine doctor.

Now, reflect on the Kincardine property known today as the Bluewater Trailer Park, known to be inhabited by shoppers of Kincardine businesses, community volunteers, and many past residents who have purchased property and have become ratepayers, themselves.

This facility pays to the town $35,000, plus or minus, provides its own maintenance minus capital expenditures, along with paying all taxes and utilities, and insurances, at no expense to the municipality.

Lastly, it is important to reflect back at taxes and the increases, no longer in the neighbourhood of inflation or the revered three per cent or less to match workers hoped-for wage increases.

It seems as if the past council enjoyed the luxury of incurring consultation fees as an easy trade-off without discussing how any of the decisions made would prove to enhance economic value or maintain the municipality that we choose to call home.

If this is acceptable, then a yes is in order for the councillors new or to be re-elected. If this is less than acceptable, then a no is to be considered.

   Thank You Bill Clubb for encouraging us to reflect before we vote. I agree reflection is important and I would like to offer a positive way forward,The improvements at station beach are something to be celebrate. A clean beach is enjoyed every day by local families and helps our downtown businesses thrive. On the South street Bridge I see it differently. I don't think the bridge is missed by many, and with replacement at over a million dollars, I feel those funds could go to more appropriate infrastructure that serves more residents each day. On the Secord monument which was removed , I feel the issue should be laid to rest. The cemetery that has a lot of monuments of past residents. the cemetery is the place where we can go and reflect and celebrate the people who have passed. On the property known as the Bluewater Trailer Park I see a wonderful opportunity. I believe it should be a park used by all citizens , not 40 permanent trailer sites. In its place it could be beautiful focal point for all to enjoy- a bandshell for summer concerts , flowers and gardens and an open space for all to enjoy. this is the kind of positive investment that brings us together.    I really hope Kincardine township residents take these comments made by Bill Clubb in consideration when casting their vote for our new representatives. Talking to others these are some of the major failings of the present council. Our vote is the most important way we can have significant input into who and how things are run.

   Voters should take a careful look at the present Town Council and its record over the past several years as they consider the upcoming election. One recent development that deserves attention is the lawsuit involving the Secord family. Regardless of the outcome of the litigation, the fact that a lawsuit has arisen from a matter involving the Town should prompt residents to ask questions about the decisions and processes that led to it. Our elected officials are entrusted with making thoughtful, responsible decisions on behalf of the community. Voters should examine the council’s record, consider how decisions have been made, and ask whether those decisions have served the best interests of residents. Elections provide an opportunity for citizens to evaluate the performance of their elected representatives. Rather than focusing only on campaign promises, voters should look carefully at the actions and decisions of the current council over the past couple of years and decide what those actions tell them about the direction of our community. An informed electorate is essential to good local government. I encourage every voter to review the record, ask questions, and participate thoughtfully in the upcoming election.
