Grey Bruce Public Health has appointed Dr. Brittany Graham to the permanent position of Grey Bruce medical officer of health and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Grey Bruce board of health, after serving in an acting capacity in this role since April 16.
The board formally approved the appointment during its regular meeting, Friday.
The board also announced that Dr. Eileen de Villa will serve as acting medical officer of health and CEO during Graham’s parental leave, which is set to begin Sept. 8 and last until next summer.
Board chairman Kenneth Craig said the board’s decisions will help ensure organizational stability and leadership continuity, allowing Grey Bruce Public Health to build on the positive momentum achieved during an important new chapter for the organization.
He said Graham has done an excellent job as acting medical officer of health, and the board is thrilled to welcome her to the permanent position.
“We are also fortunate that Dr. de Villa has agreed to serve as acting medical officer of health and CEO while Dr. Graham is on parental leave. Dr. de Villa is a respected leader in public health who knows this organization and community well from her time as a special advisor to the board of health. We are certainly in good hands until Dr. Graham’s return.”
De Villa brings extensive public health expertise. She served as medical officer of health for the City of Toronto from 2017-24, during which her leadership was instrumental in guiding the city through the COVID-19 pandemic. More recently, as special advisor to the Ontario chief medical officer of health, she has demonstrated her dedication to public health's long-term success.
“I am honoured to take on the role of acting Medical officer of health and CEO, and to support the important work already underway at public health," said de Villa. "During Dr. Graham’s absence, I will focus on advancing her vision for the organization, while supporting public health staff members as they continue delivering essential programs and services to the people of Grey Bruce.”
Graham thanked the board, public health staff, partners and the community for the support during her tenure as acting medical officer of health and CEO. “With a newly-reconstituted board and dedicated staff, the organization’s future is bright, and I look forward to contributing to its continued success when I return from leave.”
