Geddes Park barn demolition to begin next week

Geddes Park barn demolition to begin next week

The Municipality of Kincardine will be removing the barn at the entrance to Geddes Park during the week of Aug. 31.

In a press release issued Tuesday, the municipality states that the barn is currently vacant and was most recently used for storage by community and labyrinth garden user groups. That storage has since been relocated to new storage sheds on-site.

The barn has been identified as structurally-deficient through an assessment by a structural engineer. Cracking was identified in the foundation walls, and remediation was not recommended due to the severity of the deficiencies and associated costs. The municipality is proceeding with removal for the safety of park users and the public.

TEMPORARY PARK ACCESS CHANGES

During demolition:

  • The Geddes Park parking lot will be closed.

  • A section of the Red Trail leading to the parking area will be closed.

  • The labyrinth will remain accessible via the Red Trail, but cannot be accessed through the barn entrance or closed area.

  • Residents and park users can expect construction noise and truck traffic in the area.

The remainder of Geddes Park will remain accessible. For safety, the public is asked to avoid the demolition area while work is underway.

After demolition:

Following removal of the barn, the area will be restored through naturalization, including new plantings and grasses.

The barn is part of the history of Geddes Park and the surrounding community. Heritage Kincardine is documenting its history, with a heritage plaque anticipated to be installed in the spring to commemorate the structure.
