Barb Fisher joins race for mayor of Kincardine in October municipal election

Barb Fisher of Kincardine has joined the race for mayor of Kincardine in the Oct. 26 municipal and school board elections.

She joins incumbent Kenneth Craig and Ward 2 councillor Bill Stewart for the top job on council.

Incumbent councillor Rory Cavanagh is the lone candidate for deputy mayor.

Four people are running for the three councillor-at-large seats, including incumbent Mike Hinchberger (currently serving as deputy mayor) and newcomers Mike McKechnie, Darrel Perry, and Ali Shah.

Incumbent councillor-at-large Jennifer Prenger and newcomer Russ Crook are running for Ward 1 councillor, Kyle McKay and Michael Ferrier are running for Ward 2 councillor, and incumbent Amanda Steinhoff-Gray is running for Ward 3 councillor.

In Kincardine, the nine-member council consists of the mayor, deputy mayor, three councillors-at-large, two Ward 1 (Town of Kincardine) councillors, one Ward 2 (Kincardine Township) councillor, and one Ward 3 (Bruce Township) councillor.

Meanwhile in Huron-Kinloss, there is also a race for mayor, with incumbent Don Murray squaring off against newcomer Shawn Plante.

Incumbent deputy mayor Jim Hanna is running for re-election, and councillor candidates include incumbents Shari Flett, Scott Gibson, Ed McGugan and Carl Sloetjes, and newcomers Kirk Livingston and Tracy Irwin.

In Huron-Kinloss, the seven-member council consists of the mayor, deputy mayor and five councillors.

There is a race for local French-language public district school board trustee as Rachael Golem of Orangeville has filed to run against Eric Lapointe of Barrie.

Also filing nominations, are Lori Di Castri, incumbent local trustee with the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board; and Jan Johnstone of Kincardine, incumbent Bluewater District School Board trustee for Kincardine and Huron-Kinloss.
Nominations opened May 1 and run until Nomination Day, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m.

Election timetable:

  • Aug. 21 - Nomination day (last day to be nominated), between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

  • Aug. 24 - Certification of nominations by 4 p.m.

  • Aug. 24 - Official list of candidates posted with any declaration of acclamation after 4 p.m.

  • Sept. 1 - Preliminary list of electors released to the public

  • Oct. 19 - Voting period for electors begins at 10 a.m.

  • Oct. 23 - Third-party registration period closes

  • Oct. 26 - Final day to vote (ends at 8 p.m.)

  • Nov. 15, 2026 - council term begins

  • Nov. 14, 2030 - council term ends
