Gurbin's Gang gears up for Lighthouse-to-Lighthouse Half Marathon for Kincardine Hospital

With just over eight weeks until race day, the Lighthouse-to-Lighthouse Half Marathon and 5K fund-raising team has officially launched its program, with a major emphasis on community-driven teams and individuals to support the Kincardine Hospital expansion and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine project.

One of the first teams to register was Gurbin’s Gang, led by Dr. Jason Murray and created in recognition of Kincardine physician, Dr. Gary Gurbin, who recently retired after almost six decades of dedicated service and compassionate care to local families.

The team was formed by the doctors and nurses at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre - Kincardine Hospital who wanted to celebrate Gurbin’s legacy in a meaningful way.

Dr. Gary Gurbin gave this community decades of care, compassion, and leadership," said Murray. "Gurbin’s Gang is running to celebrate that — and yes, we’re absolutely running to take home the fund-raising team trophy. Consider this your friendly challenge: come chase us down.”

Community members can support Gurbin’s Gang or any of the other registered teams by donating directly to a team or to an individual participant. Every dollar raised by an individual automatically counts toward his/her team’s total, helping teams climb the leader-board and compete for the top team trophy and year-long bragging rights.

In addition to the team competition, participants can earn individual fund-raising rewards that recognize personal effort and community impact. Top individual fund-raisers will also be recognized with awards; earn rewards based on donations raised and bragging rights of their own. We’re excited to introduce fund-raising incentives that celebrate every runner’s commitment,” said Becky Fair, president of the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation, host of the new annual event. “Whether you raise $50 or $5,000, your support helps bring modern, expanded care — including Bruce County’s first MRI — closer to home.”

Event registration remains strong, with the half marathon sold out, but there is still room to join the 5K. The foundation encourages participants to begin fund-raising early and take advantage of the incentive program which runs to Sept. 20.

Funds raised through this event directly support the hospital expansion, which features a new emergency department, expanded laboratory, and modern medical imaging including the region’s first MRI — a transformational addition to local health care.
