The Huron United Football Club built off the momentum from last week's strong performance, dispatching the Suspects FC by a score of 4-2 in the Tri-City Men's Soccer League match, July 21.
The visiting squad showed up close to kick-off, and Huron United took advantage of its opponent's lack of warm-up from the jump. In the 4th minute, attacker Adam Carty forced a corner kick off a turnover, and in the ensuing scramble in the box, winger Andrew Wiegersma nodded Gerrit Satosek's rebound over the line to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Huron United kept the pedal down despite the early lead, generating a series of dead ball situations deep in the Suspects’ half. A powerful deflected shot from distance off the boot of Wiegersma rebounded off the post to an expectant Drew Cobean, but his goal was negated by an offside call.
The Suspects equalized in the 20th minute off a well-weighted ball in behind Huron United's back-line, and the striker's accurate finish left keeper Josh Coleman with no chance. The 1-1 score-line held into half-time.
Huron United re-established the lead in the 54th minute when holding mid-fielder Simon Andonian cleverly swung the ball into the path of full-back Anderson Wolfe on the left side of the box. Wolfe met the ball at full sprint, absorbed the impact of the diving keeper, and knocked the ball over the line for a 2-1 Huron United advantage.
The Suspects again pulled level in the 63rd minute after a corner kick skimmed along the crossbar in the high wind before being headed past Coleman into the Huron United net. Co-captain Satosek had no interest in an even score-line, and restored Huron United's advantage in the 65th on a tremendous individual effort. Satosek won the ball off a Suspects’ defender on the left side of the 18-yard box, pulled the ball back onto his right foot to shake loose from his marker, and blasted his shot through the keeper's hands.
Centre-back Jason Leiskau smartly decided to direct the ball back to the hot hand, finding Satosek with a long ball in the 68th minute. Satosek again cut across the Suspects' box from the left and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to increase Huron United’s lead to 4-2.
Caretaker manager Masoom Saromie made a series of savvy substitutions to maintain the lead through the final whistle, earning all three points from the fixture.
The team voted Satosek as Man of the Match for his dominant offensive performance. Honourable mentions went to full-backs Dylan Simon, Wolfe, and Ryan Carty.
Huron United is playing out of the Tri-City Men's Soccer League again this season.
