Bruce County Museum to offer 10-week creative arts workshop for seniors

The Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southampton will host a 10-week creative arts workshop, "I'm Not Done Yet!" for adults, aged 55 and older, this fall.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 22, the workshop offers participants an opportunity to explore storytelling, acting, music and movement in a supportive and engaging environment.

Participants will meet once a week, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., building creative skills through hands-on exercises in storytelling, theatre and music. The workshop will be led by Joan Chandler (acting, theatre and improvisation) and David Sereda (singing and songwriting) of Sheatre, an award-winning, community-engaged arts company based in Grey-Bruce, along with guest artists.

This workshop is about exploring creativity in a fun, welcoming space while connecting with others in the community,” said museum director Cathy McGirr.

Over the course of the program, participants will collaborate to create original scenes and songs, which they will present at the end of the series.

"These workshops are open to anyone over the age of 55 who wants to try something creative,” says Sereda. “Perhaps you’ve always wanted to sing or try acting — we believe you are never too old to try something new and have fun doing it! Why should kids have all the fun?”

The program is free to join, with a light lunch provided each week. Space is limited, and those interested are encouraged to pre-register.

The museum will host a public presentation, Nov. 24, from 1:30-3 p.m., in the Bruce Power Theatre. The participants will showcase their work and the performance is free to attend. Light refreshments will be available. All are welcome. Please register in advance.

This project was made possible, in part, by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.
