Congratulations to the Kincardine Scottish Festival for another great weekend celebrating music, friends, family and food! It's nice that the weather was pretty great too!
There have been several family picnics, and grandchildren have been visiting; it's sure nice to see folks in the area. Special thanks to the Ripley Legion for the burgers and music on Friday evenings; what a great time too!
Belated birthday greetings to Jean MacDonald, Kendall Cubberley, Ferne Abell, Sasha Bridge, Sarah Farrell, Evylene MacTavish who is 90, and to Reine Arnold and Bernice Courtney who celebrated their 70th birthdays!
And belated wedding anniversary wishes to Carman and Bernice Courtney, Reine and Ron de Gans, Glen and Sarah Farrell, Jerry and Kay Logtenberg, Murray and Sarah Lotton, and Cheryl and Daryl Murray!
We extend our sympathy to the families of Linda Emmerton and Fran Roppel and other families grieving at this time. There will be lots of memories shared when you gather.
The Bruce County Federation has been hosting Agricultural Safety Days and had 40 children attending in Tiverton, July 14. The next one was set for Paisley, July 28. These events are for all children, ages six to 10. Everyone can pick up safety tips and parents are most welcome to stay too!
Jim and Fran Farrell recently travelled to Whitehorse, Yukon, with Logtenberg family members to celebrate the wedding of their niece, Jennifer Logtenberg, and Josh Carr at the Robert Service Campground in Whitehorse. They explored downtown Whitehorse at the McBride Museum which has most of the history of the Yukon, Fireweed Market on Thursday evenings, Burnt Toast Cafe, Tony's Restaurant, Bear's Paw Quilt Shop, excellent book shops, and the S.S. Klondike, one of the last river barges which has a permanent location in the Rotary Peace Park.
Other days were spent driving out to the Hot Springs at Takhini, exploring the Town of Carcross where the train still goes to Skagway and you can stamp your passport; taking a boat tour up the Yukon River, seeing bears, moose and bald eagles on the travels; climbing in the Carcross Desert, the smallest desert in the world. The Wild Yukon Adventure Museum has an actual re-created woolly mammoth to size, grizzly bears, wolves and many other animals in the display room. There is also an excellent display from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with some of the one ton of required supplies needed for each person who decided to live in the Yukon for a year. The staff cares for 80 sled dogs, and some of them race in the Ididtarod sled dog races in the winter.
Some of us also did a tour to Dawson City on some very rough road, to explore that gold mining town. Another day trip was to the Kluane National Park with a stop at Haines Junction and onto Kathleen Lake. We visited the Yukon Beringia Centre to learn about the glaciers and the movement of the many animals - those that survived and those that didn't. The Yukon Transportation Museum, just next door, has more history of the Yukon in trains, planes, construction equipment, boats, and stories of people who have made the Yukon what it is.
The City of Whitehorse has a population of about 35,000 and the Yukon, itself, has tourism as the secondary industry after mining. There are several trails, parks and historic towns around Whitehorse; you can do horseback riding, canoe adventures, take motorboat rides on the Yukon River, or hire a plane and fly to the glacier parks and hike the many trails. A beautiful place to enjoy the food, people, stories, trees, mountains and sometimes, cold breezes! The Yukon is a beautiful territory to visit and some people just end up staying!
