SVCA issues flood outlook statement due to significant rainfall expected this week
The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) has issued a flood outlook statement due to significant rainfall expected throughout the week.

Sunday (April 12), the Saugeen watershed received between 10-60 millimetres (mm) of rain. The highest amounts occurred along the Lake Huron shoreline and in northern areas of the watershed. A rainfall warning from Environment Canada indicated additional rainfall amounts between 10-20 mm Monday morning (April 13).

After a break in precipitation later Monday, another round of heavy rain may begin Tuesday morning (April 14). Forecasts indicate that thunderstorms are expected on Tuesday, with stronger storms more likely in the afternoon and evening. Rainfall amounts up to 35 mm are expected, with higher amounts possible for areas that receive multiple rounds of thunderstorms. Extended forecasts indicate rain through Thursday (April 16).

Streams and rivers remain high following last week’s rain and the additional rain received this past weekend. Ground is saturated throughout the watershed and will have limited ability to absorb the additional rainfall, resulting in considerable surface run-off into local watercourses.

While significant flooding is not expected, the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas of the watershed, exists. Small watercourses may over-top their banks. Pooling of water in agricultural fields and other areas with poor drainage, is expected.

Municipal staff is advised to monitor drainage systems and related infrastructure. Residents are advised to exercise caution near all watercourses as stream banks may be slippery and unstable, and the water is very cold and fast-moving.

SVCA staff will be closely monitoring watershed conditions and will provide an update if conditions change. This message will remain in effect until Friday, April 17, at 12 pm, unless updated otherwise.
