South Bruce OPP part of "Safety Stops Here" traffic safety initiative
(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON)- The South Bruce OPP is stepping up school bus enforcement.
From March 2-13, OPP officers across West Region will be on the look-out for drivers who fail to stop for school buses. This two-week traffic safety initiative will focus on school bus safety through enforcement, education, and community engagement.
OPP officers will be patrolling school bus routes and school zones to promote compliance and address dangerous driving behaviours. Enforcement is focused on violations that put children at risk, including failing to stop for school buses, speeding, distracted driving, and other unsafe actions near school transportation routes.
Failing to stop for a school bus with red lights flashing, is a serious offence. First-time offenders can face fines between $400 and $2,000, plus six demerit points.
Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to stop and drivers in both directions must slow down and be ready to stop. When the bus has red lights flashing and the stop arm extended, it is fully stopped, and motorists in both directions must stop.
School bus safety doesn't stop with enforcement. It takes the co-operation of all road-users. Slowing down, paying attention, and following the law can prevent tragedies and ensure students arrive at school and home safely. Caregivers are urged to take time to review safe bus habits with their children and help ensure that every ride is a safe one.
