Bruce County Housing Corporation purchases site in in Walkerton for new 40-unit development
The Bruce County Housing Corporation has purchased 1.5 acres of land, located on Eastridge Road in Walkerton, for a 40-unit residential apartment-style development. The finalization of the purchase and sale between the corporation and the Municipality of Brockton was part of the corporation’s board meeting, Thursday (Sept. 4).
“This development will blend affordable and market-rate housing in a way that is both financially sustainable and socially inclusive,” said Tina Metcalf, chief executive officer of the housing corporation and Bruce County’s director of human services. “Our last build, the Penetangore Hub in Kincardine, is known for its welcoming atmosphere and innovative design. We’re proud to be able to carry those principles forward with this new build.”
The acquisition marks a major milestone in the corporation’s commitment to expanding community housing options. Planned to align with the existing developments in the area, the build will reflect a commitment to affordability, accessibility, and long-term sustainability.
“We are deeply grateful to the Municipality of Brockton for its generous contribution of land at a nominal cost,” said county warden Luke Charbonneau. “It is reflective of Brockton’s strong commitment to building affordable housing in our county.”
As part of the agreement, the corporation is collaborating with Brockton to plan and develop a new community-use playground. It will promote physical activity, encourage social interaction, and support the creation of a vibrant, inclusive neighbourhood where families can thrive.
“Community housing is more than just bricks and mortar,” said Brockton mayor Chris Peabody. “It’s a driver of economic growth. Projects like this help keep workers in the area, create jobs, and provide much-needed housing for those in our manufacturing, construction, and service sectors. They play a vital role in building long-term stability and supporting the healthy growth of our community.”
