Resident concerned that Kincardine removed multi-use path from capital budget
To the Editor:
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent decision by Kincardine council to remove the Broadway Street multi-use path from the 2025 capital budget. This decision is troubling as it directly impacts the safety and accessibility of our community.
For several years, the sidewalk along the Broadway Street corridor has been a crucial part of the capital plan, yet it has consistently been overlooked. The urgent need for this project cannot be overstated. This corridor is heavily used by students travelling from the senior school for lunch, as well as by residents commuting between the downtown core and important shopping areas, such as No Frills and Shoppers Drug Mart.
Studies have repeatedly shown that areas with speeds exceeding 20-30 km/h pose significant risks to pedestrians, leading to potentially fatal outcomes in case of accidents. With Broadway Street having a speed limit of 60 km/h and lacking sidewalks or bike lanes, the current situation is alarmingly unsafe for both pedestrians and cyclists.
The proposed multi-use path would not only provide a vital link for cyclists and pedestrians travelling safely from behind the Davidson Centre to these high-traffic areas, but also aligns with broader community safety goals.
Furthermore, during the recent special council meeting, Jan. 13, staff highlighted that this project would negate the necessity for several future construction projects aimed at creating safe corridors along North Street and in front of Rexall.
In addition to increasing safety and accessibility, this project would help to continue expanding the active transportation network that Kincardine has committed to building as part of the Cycling Master Plan, adopted in 2021.
We have seen many improvements to Kincardine’s active transportation network in recent years; however, Broadway Street remains the most significant arterial road remaining without any form of sidewalk or active transportation infrastructure.
By investing in this multi-use path, Kincardine can further position itself as a community that cares about sustainability and the environment. Active transportation options reduce carbon emissions, promote healthier lifestyles, and contribute to a more vibrant and connected community.
It is imperative that our elected officials reconsider their decision and reinstate funding for the Broadway Street multi-use path in the 2025 capital budget.
This investment is not just about convenience; it is about ensuring the fundamental safety and well-being of everyone in our community. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to prioritize projects that enhance accessibility, protect lives, and promote sustainable practices.
Sincerely,
Amanda Saxton
