Huron United upsets third-seeded Stratford team in round one of playoffs
In a convincing upset, the Huron United Football Club triumphed over the third-seeded Stratford Home Farm SCFC in the first round of the playoffs, Tuesday, Sept. 5.

From the opening whistle, it was evident that Huron United came to play. The team’s strong passing and impeccable ball retention on the turf surface gave it an early advantage.

The breakthrough moment came at the 20-minute mark when forward Andrew Wiegersma initiated a remarkable sequence of plays. Wiegersma's precise cross found Drew Cobean who executed a textbook header to set up Adam Carty for a goal, giving Huron United a 1-0 lead.

Huron United continued to apply stifling defensive pressure throughout the first half, preventing Stratford from establishing any rhythm in its play. “If we keep up the effort and win the 50-50 balls, this game is ours”, said team veteran Gys Weverink.

As the second half commenced, Stratford showed signs of resurgence, launching several threatening plays toward Huron United's goal. However, goalkeeper Dylan Simon was in impeccable form and thwarted every attempt.

Huron United quickly regained its composure, resuming the first-half dominance in attacking play. In the 70th minute, a well-executed throw-in to Jason Leiskau resulted in a low cross to Carty, who notched his second goal of the match and his eighth of the season.

The game took a dramatic turn at the 80-minute mark when Wiegersma broke free from the opposing centreback on a breakaway. In a desperate attempt to prevent a goal, a Stratford player tackled Wiegersma from behind, earning himself a red card and leaving his team with 10 players.

Stratford was unable to mount a comeback, thanks to Huron United's resolute defence. The final score remained 2-0 for Huron United.

The accolades for this remarkable victory were handed out after the game. Wiegersma was named the man of the match for his attacking play, creating opportunities for teammates and relentless efforts which ultimately resulted in much-needed goals for the team.

Goalkeeper Simon earned praise for his back-to-back shut-out performances. Defenders Chris Coady, Simon Andonian, and Andrew Benney were also acknowledged for their resolute defensive efforts, which contributed to the shut-out.

With this thrilling victory, the Huron United Football Club advances to the semi-finals, where it will face the first-seeded Rohingya FC. The highly-anticipated match will take place at Woodside 2 in Kitchener, Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m., promising another exciting chapter in Huron United's playoff journey.
