Off the Broom: Still time to register for third session of curling this season
The second session of curling got under way, Jan. 2, and will continue for seven weeks at which time our third and final session of the year will begin. There is still time to register for that third session which will run from Feb. 20 to April 7. If you have any questions or if you wish to register, send an E-mail to kccregistrar01@gmail.com.

The annual men’s bonspiel was held Jan. 7. The spiel was full with 16 teams and as always, was a much-enjoyed day. The early draw winners were Peter Newton - 31 points, Lucas Haugh - 29 points and Adam Kelly - 22points. The late draw was won by Mark Patterson with 32 points, followed by Derek Regier - 28 points and Sam Corbett - 20 points. The overall winner of the day was the Mark Patterson team of the Golden Acres Curling Club in Blenheim.

We often have teams returning year after year to our men’s spiel but there are none who can match the record of the McFadyens, most now living in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area), but some who called Kincardine home at some point. They have been attending this bonspiel since 1966! Putting that into perspective, our club was built in 1964. It is not always the same team but a combination of family who come to enjoy the day. We hope they will continue this tradition for many more years.

In the Grey Bruce Major League, the Kincardine entry of Les Shane, Jim Roberts, Mark Luckhardt and Tim Church, is having some very close games. The team was one-and-one prior to the Dec. 7 game in Tara against Don Bartley (Tara), winning that one in an extra end. At home the following week, the team played Joey Rettinger (Walkerton) and lost a close one, 6-5. The Dec. 21 game was played in Tara against the Louis Gregg team (Paisley) and the guys were tied in the fifth end when there was a power failure. That game resumed Jan. 11 in which the Shane team lost in an extra end. Then the Kincardine rink played the same team again and won that one.

Paisley hosted the Jan. 4 games and the Kincardine team defeated Al Hutchinson (Owen Sound), again in an extra end. They now sit at four wins and three losses in the standings. The teams will be back in Kincardine, Wednesday, Feb. 1.

Our Mixed Bonspiel is slated for Saturday, Feb. 4. The early draw is filled but the late draw is looking for a few more teams to fill it. There is a sign-up sheet at the club if you are interested in participating.
