To the Editor:
I was extremely disappointed with Kincardine council at the Sept. 2 council meeting where it failed to proceed with an application for the Inverhuron water and sewer project.
We need the sewers! For the past six years, the residents of Inverhuron have been making decisions based on the installation of these proposed sewers. We have sold property that has been in the family since the mid-1800s in anticipation of the future financial burdens as indicated by the municipality. Under normal circumstances, this property would not have been sold. We have also been told that we were not allowed to do anything to our existing systems in anticipation of the new sewer project.
The council, Sept. 2, spoke of concerns of liabilities to the municipalities on projects. Where are the council’s liabilities with the likely potential of environmental problems that can occur with a ‘do-nothing’ approach after the confirmation that Inverhuron would receive sewers?
Applying for a grant does NOT prevent the option of future public input or re-engineering to allow for smaller projects under the original scope. It gives us six years to makes changes and complete construction. It seems irresponsible to not utilize the time spent and the expenses of engineering, the EA (Environmental Assessment) process and the archeological studies completed under the original project.
I truly believe that these types of grants are being offered again so soon as a result of the upcoming federal election. I also have concerns that with the talk of economic decline, that a new government would stop these types of grants.
How ironic that when we returned to Inverhuron after the meeting, the beach had been closed due to E-coli.
I applaud the efforts of the council members who continue to support the Inverhuron project and urge the other councillors to reconsider the application for this grant.
