Federal Liberal government would invest in children and educators, says Thompson
A Liberal government, led by Justin Trudeau, would invest in Canadian children by giving teachers and Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) in Huron-Bruce - and across the country - a new tax benefit for school supplies they purchase to enhance student learning, says Allan Thompson, federal Liberal candidate for Huron-Bruce

"Our children need stimulating and positive environments to contribute to healthy learning and development," he says. "Our tax system does not currently recognize the many out-of-pocket expenses that teachers and Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) incur in order to set up their classrooms."

The Liberals would introduce a new Teacher and Early Childhood Educator School Supply Tax Benefit, accessible to all teachers and ECEs, Thompson says. This refundable tax benefit would be available regardless of income level, and would provide a cash benefit of up to $150 annually on up to $1,000 in school supplies and educational materials. The list of allowable school supplies would draw on best practices in Prince Edward Island which has already implemented a provincial school supply tax benefit.

"By helping to facilitate the important work done by our teachers, we ensure our students have learning environments where they can thrive," says Thompson. "In addition to the larger Canada Child Benefit and the Liberal tax cut for the middle class, this new tax benefit recognizes the essential work done by our great teachers and educators, and invests in generations of young Canadians, here in Huron-Bruce and across the country."
