Off the Broom - Kincardine Curling Club news
The first session of this year’s curling season has been completed. The exception is the Monday night draw which could be an interesting finish as Team Downs, Team Guppy and Team MacEachern could all end up with identical 5-2 records. Who will be the winners? The Tuesday competitive draw had skips Les Shane and Peter Newton both with 6-1 records.

One of our newer draws is the mixed doubles which is held Wednesdays. This draw is comprised of only two people per team and is becoming very popular among curlers. Winners of that draw were Doug and Shelley Duchene.

Thursday night, there were nine teams but only seven weeks to complete the draw which meant some teams had a bye while others did not. Heather Struthers and her team of Don Turcotte, Kevin Fournier (he of the Movember shaved-off beard fame) and Katherine Young, finished at 5-2 with no bye. Hot on their tail, but playing with a bye, was the team of Mike Meraw, Gail MacIntosh, Logan Wolfe and Brandie Bernard at 5-1.

The first bonspiel of the season took place in mid-December and it was our Mixed Doubles spiel, sponsored by Creative Casuals. There were eight teams, evenly divided into “experienced” or “fun.” And fun they did have until part-way through the fourth game when the power went out.

Not to be deterred by the darkness, the cell phone flashlights came alive and supper was served and prizes awarded. Mark Luckhardt and Jim Roberts were  the experienced winners, and Phil and Angela Thompkins took top prize for the fun group. The trivia contest was won by Doug and Anne Kukurudza.

The annual men’s bonspiel will be held Jan. 8.

The second session will begin early in the new year. There are still some openings on various draws so if you are interested, send an e-mail to kincardinecc@gmail,com and someone will get back to you.
