Kincardine Bulldogs split games on the weekend
The Kincardine Bulldogs lost in overtime to the Wingham Ironmen, but edged out the Walkerton Hawks, also in overtime, in Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL) action on the weekend.
The Bulldogs hosted both games at the Davidson Centre.
Friday night, the ‘Dogs battled the Ironmen and finished regulation with a 3-3 tie, forcing the game into overtime, with Wingham scoring and taking the 4-3 win.
Kincardine opened the scoring early in the first with a goal by Gavin Gibbons from Bryce McFadden and goalie Josh Jacklin. Minutes later, Kincardine was up, 2-0, on an unassisted effort by Steven Grant.
Wingham fired back on the powerplay, to make it 2-1 heading into the second frame where Wingham scored two unanswered goals, to take a 3-2 lead.
Early in the third, Grant got his second of the game, from Jordan Moulton, to tie things up and head into overtime.
Six-and-a-half minutes into overtime, Wingham scored for the 4-3 win.
Jacklin made 29 saves on 32 shots, while goalie Ryan Tanner, who filled in late in the game after Jacklin was injured, made one save on two shots.
The Walkerton Hawks came soaring into the Davidson Centre, Saturday afternoon, only to have their wings clipped, and go home on the short end of a 3-2 loss.
The Hawks grabbed two quick goals in the first period, before Kincardine finally gained some momentum on the powerplay in the second, as Jordan Beisel put the ‘Dogs on the board, assisted by Austin Waite.
Grant tied things up minutes later, scoring from Joseph Pringle and Moulton, and that’s how regulation time ended, 2-2, forcing the game into overtime.
A minute-and-a-half into overtime, Parker Miller scored from Gavin Downs, to give Kincardine the 3-2 win.
Goalie Kwade Beisel, in his first game with the Bulldogs, was thrilled with the win, making 31 saves on 33 shots.
Kwade Beisel filled in Saturday night, after Jacklin was injured late in the game against Wingham, and Tanner was playing in the PJHL Prospects game in Orillia. A cousin of forward Jordan Beisel, Kwade got the emergency call-up from his uncle, general manager Warren Beisel, to start against Walkerton in his first PJHL game.
Kwade was ready for the chance to mind the net for the Bulldogs, and after the win, he was excited to have his photo taken with the game puck!
The Bulldogs travel to Mount Forest to take on the Patriots, Friday, Dec. 17, at 8:30 p.m., and are back at the Davidson Centre to face the Hanover Barons, Saturday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
They take a break over the Christmas holidays, with their final game of the year, Thursday, Dec. 30, at 7:30 p.m., when they are at home to the Goderich Flyers, at the Davidson Centre.
