Girls study science and the environment at GEMS Camp

A total of 40 girls, ages eight to 12, learned about science and the environment, while attending GEMS Camp at the Bruce Power Visitors' Centre, during the first two weeks of August.

Led by Melani Joseph of Mississauga with her capable assistants, Mignon Joseph, also of Mississauga, and Mara Lita of Port Elgin, the young scientists worked in groups, designing and making dresses out of recycled items. At the open house, on the Friday of each week (Aug. 7 and 14), the girls then displayed their creations for the audience.

As they designed and made the dresses, the girls were to focus on the 4R's - Recycle, Reduce, Reuse and Re-invent.

There were 20 girls each week, enjoying science magic and crafts, and learning from experts in the field of engineering, math and science. They also made sundials and wind vanes.

"GEMS Camp is a way to get girls this age interested in these subjects," says Melani Joseph. "These are our future scientists, after all."

She thanked Bruce Power for its support of the program, as well as Women in Nuclear (WiN) Bruce and volunteer Dominic Jackson.

At the end of the week, each girl received a certificate of achievement.
