Kincardine resident Jill Fraser has been recognized as a Hockey Canada Champion.

Monday, she received a special jersey in honour of her outstanding dedication to the game and, in this case, keeping the passion for hockey running through an especially difficult year.

Fraser (née Van Dam) started playing hockey in Tiverton, before playing a few years with Kincardine Minor Hockey.

Her family left Kincardine after the Bruce A generating station shut down in the late 1990s. She went on to have a distinguished minor hockey career with the Scarborough Sharks AA team, Toronto Sting Intermediate, and the Under-18 (U18) Team Ontario.

She also played in the National Women’s U18 Championship game, and went on to play Division 1 hockey for the University of Connecticut (UConn) Huskies.

Fraser returned to Kincardine as an adult, with her husband, Ryan, and two sons, Briley and Myles.

She has coached with the Kincardine Minor Hockey girls program for a few years, and is the vice-president of girls hockey with the Kincardine Minor Hockey Association.

The Hockey Canada Champion recognition is part of the Hockey Canada Community, an on-line destination to share and celebrate great Canadian hockey stories, sponsored by Hockey Canada and Scotiabank, the official bank of Hockey Canada.

At HockeyCanada.ca/Community, find the Hockey Canada Champions. These players, coaches, officials, volunteers and more, have made a significant impact on the game in their communities. The nominations come from Hockey Canada’s 13 members and once selected, the champions receive a Hockey Canada jersey and Scotiabank prize pack, and are featured in a video shared across all Hockey Canada platforms.

In addition to the Hockey Canada Champions, feature videos and written stories are posted monthly about the amazing work Canadians are doing to support the game of hockey locally. For more information on the Hockey Canada Community, presented by Scotiabank, visit hockeycanada.ca and follow along via social media on Facebook and Twitter.
